Like many Northern European countries, the climate is a big part of life in Scotland, though for many of its inhabitants, this is no impediment to getting on with life and many will claim with pride that it takes a certain type of person to prosper there. The highlight of the calendar is the Edinburgh Arts Festival in August, and the simultaneous Fringe Festival, both world renown. The Highland games is a kind of Olympics of ancient sports and the Scottish make New Years Eve, or Hogmanay, an event all of their own.
